Gernot Holler (KFU, advisor K. Kunisch): A bilevel approach for parameter learning in inverse problems

Abstract: We address a learning approach for choosing regularization weights in multi-penalty Tikhonov regularization of ill-posed inverse problems. As motivating examples, we consider the inverse problems of estimating parameters in elliptic partial differential equations. Assuming that some ground truth data is given, the basic idea is to learn regularization weights by solving a bilevel (optimization) problem. While bilevel problems are typically non convex, it is often assumed that at least the lower level problems are convex. However, this is in general not the case for non linear parameter estimation problems. This leads to significant issues when deriving optimality conditions. We discuss these issues and describe how they can be resolved for specific examples.[hide abstract]
